Island life — in essence
fjori fôra
The wild flora of Hvar, gathered into one garden
Gdinj · Island of Hvar · Croatia
Plan your visitWelcome
fjori fôra means, quite literally, ‘the flowers of Hvar’ — an educational and interactive garden where the wild flora of the island comes to life.
On a 2,500 m² plot in the village of Gdinj, a former patchwork of vineyard, lavender and rosemary was reborn — over two and a half years, hand in hand with agronomist and garden designer Kristina Lazaneo — into a living oasis of more than eighty plant species, each with its own story and its own usefulness to people.
The concept
Asymmetric symmetry — tradition meets the modern
The plot kept its original geometry: dry-stone walls divide it into smaller fields, just as the island has been cultivated for centuries. Stone cleared from the land became the foundation for new tables, stairs and benches, levelled and stacked by hand in the old Dalmatian way.
Within this strict frame the species are arranged by the principle of ‘asymmetric symmetry’ — symmetrical shapes laid out asymmetrically, mirroring wild nature and the gentle human hand that tends it. We like to call it the cultivation of wilderness: seeds, cuttings and grown plants carried here from every corner of Hvar.
A circular walk, following the seasons
Movement through the garden is circular. You pass through six themed fields to reach the resting area — a place to taste and discover fjori fôra products — before returning to the start. The plants change from month to month: evergreen perennials, only seemingly static, and annuals running their full cycle from seed to seed. Year after year, the garden turns with them.

The experience
Above all: interactive and unique
Every field invites you to take part — to touch, taste, learn and play. Workshops, guided tours and tasting packages turn a walk through fjori fôra into a day with all the senses awake.
- Pose as a beekeeper or behind the wheel of a flowering vintage car
- Hands-on workshops — art, natural cosmetics and cooking
- Active picnic: sew your own fragrant lavender pillow
- A little green shop of unique herbal souvenirs
